 | As the Tennessee General Assembly is considering legislation requiring state colleges and universities to prevent illegal music downloading to student computers, Austin Peay State University (Clarksville, TN) is addressing the issue early. APSU has contracted with Ruckus Network Inc., a Herndon, Va.-based digital media service provider that supplies free and legal downloads specifically for college students. It provides access to more than 3 million songs from the most current Billboard chart toppers to tracks from thousands of indie labels. Also, hundreds of popular movies and television shows are available for legal download through this service. |
| APSU students will be able to download legally music files for free. Faculty, staff and alumni may purchase monthly subscriptions for their personal use to download music. Reggie Wooden, Web and Internet specialist in the APSU Office of Information Technology, said the service was sought in response to illegal downloading at other colleges and universities. But students will benefit from the partnership, he said. “We are thrilled about our partnership with Ruckus because of the many advantages it provides to our students. Now students can download legal, licensed and free digital content, while sharing and discovering new music through the Austin Peay community,” he said. Students can use the service for up to two computers. Windows Media Player is the software required to access Ruckus. |
